Up until last year Jim had been running this class with his turbocharged Regal V6. Before last year's event Jim developed some health problems, wanted to slow down his car, & decided to remove the turbo from his car, & make it a naturally asperated V6 motor. Jim spoke to several people including me about this ( He in NO WAY wanted to cheat when running this class ) & was open to many others at the event. But his change did not surface to the race staff on race day & he eventually won S-16 turbo. They didn't become aware of this till after the event ended. When this was found out the initial judgement was to declare his car illegal & void his win.
However knowing Jim did not cheat by hiding this change & being open about it, the thought of his car being disqualified was discounted.
Jim is a longtime faithful & supportive GSCA member & Nats. participant ( since 1992) so it was then decided to acknowledge dual winners in this class. Naturally the second place car was the true winner & he was awarded that compensation. In reality we had to do nothing for Jim's performance but we decided he should be compensated also. The initial thought would be passes to race in 2008. But rather than do this he was sent $ 250.00 after the event as prize money. What we failed to do was give him an explanation as to what this check was for.
So Jim DID receive compensation, the $ 250.00, plus he will also receive free passes to race in 2008.
Because of the above situation & Jim's dilemma it has been decided that there will now be the same two S-16 classes. Turbo remains the same but for the non-boosted motored cars the class will be changed from S-16 Big Block to " S-16 Naturally Aspirated ". Therefore any Buick V6, 350, or Big Block in this state of build can run the class.
