I am introducing myself here and hope that Richard will send me a PM. I was one of the original GSXTRA members, #13 I believe. Back then the newsletter was hand written and coppied on a Zerox with Blueish/purple ink on both sides of the sheet, who remembers that! Not sure which GS I was registered with but it could have been my first, a '66 Skylark GS that I bought from the original owner in '74. Paid $400. because he had just gotten 2 new tires or it would have been $350! I will try to keep this short but there is so much to say! Those were times when a GS was simply a used car that didn't get good mileage when prices for a gallon were still under $1.00/gallon. That car was gold w/black vinyl top and bk. interior with the ST300 and open 2.93's. Soon got a Chevelle 3.55 posi and a '67 SP400 and a KB SP 2k-3k converter that wowed all of the chevy guys! A KB Mark 2 cam(anyone know the specs?, I think about .473"/.485" with 218*/226* on 110* centers.) 800(850?) Thermoquad which I found a site that specializes in them still, awesome! Headers and a recurved distributor finished the mods. That car got such a jump that street races were often over very quickly as it wwas too much even for 440 Mopars to catch up even they had more power.
Next was a '70 GS convertible 455 , $1100. Unfortunatly the original motor had overheated and GM replaced it but with a '73 version. Still it was rust free and had a great interior and top.
Went for a badly glassed '70 after that with the correct 10.1:1 compression and after a new GM Q-jet that cost me $135. it was of on my honeymoon at 18-20mpg with a 3.31 or 3.36 chevelle rear. That car ran a 14.31 best with the T-Quad and nothing else.
Then a '67 GS 340 kept me busy or a whiule until I got my last GS, a'71 455, that ae with a floor shift TH400, a first for me, floor shift in a Buick.
The one that got away because I could not afford the $1800. was either a '71 or'72 GS 455 Stage 1 convertible 4-speed. This car was for sale around Rochester, NY and I was hoping that perhaps I could run into the buyer of that car as it would be super desireable and super rare. Blue exterior, light color that many Vettes were back then.
Now I drive a '99 Mustang GT vert. Sorry but I need a DD with some power and prices have gone up 20 times what I paid for the 5 listed cars.
I do have a friend who just purchased a '66 GS from California that was on ebay about 2 months ago and it is finally enroute to central, N.Y. Anyone know that car? It is Parchment white with a black vinyl top and white interior. It has working AC and still has the Ca. smog pump on it! I might be able to post a link in another thread, I am not computer litterate.
We will try to get it into the mid 13's with the nailhead with your help! THX, Mark
