87 GN cold starting issues |
Lead | ||

I have an 87 GN when starting cold idle risies and falls, even stalls sometimes. Looked at the usuals, plugs, wires, vacuum leaks, nothing. Anyone have an idea what might be causing this? Thanks, Brian

If you have access to a scan tool, would like to know what the coolant temp. (CTS) says. This sensor does not go bad too often but it is an easy first free check.
Do you habve an aftermarket chip installed ? Ron J. GS Nats. PR Director SEMCC PR Director (Was A Great Event This Year) |

I don't have access to a scan tool or an aftermarket chip instaled. Where can I purchase a scan tool so I can take the coolant temp reading? Its one tool I should probably have in my box.

There is a very good scan tool that works well but only with the T/R called Direct Scan. You need a basic laptop to navigate with it. I'm basically computer illerate but know how to handle one pretty well. Having data info from Direct Scan can usually help to solve your problem(s). Without the data it supplies the fix can only be attained by guesswork & trial & error.
It's common the stock chip to cause your condition especially if another component of the computer controlled system is compromised or starting to go away. Or it can be something as simple as a vacuum leak or a leak in the intake air stream between the MAF sensor & the intake plenum. If you're interested I'll tell you where to get one. Ron |

Thanks Ron. Please let me know where I can get Direct Scan. I have access to a laptop. I'd appreciate your help to walk me thru the use and reading the data.

Brian ----------------- Give Quad Air a call @ 440-235-3232 weekdays between 10am & 3pm. They should have them in stock. Also recommend you get one of their street chips & a 160 degree thermostat. They will explain the process & benefits to getting them installed. Ron |

This is fairly common, and for me I would say a normal occurrence as long as it is not severe. Mine has always done it since new. Up and down up and down,
almost stalling t some points. Just start drinving it after 30-45 seconds anyway because you are wasting gas. There's a range it goes thru is it warms up
where I think the chip is leaning the car out but it's not quite ready for it so you get that surge. If a thorough inspection doesn't reveal anything
the only thing I'd suggest is making sure your minimum idle speed and idle air control valve are working and set right.

Thats a good way to try to corecct this problem.
This cold start issue is usually related to the stock chip. Setting the minimum air rate is a must. The good scan tool is necessary to accomplish this. We've found out that the chip change really fine tunes things including cold start. Ron |
